A compound in boswellia called AKBA is the key to this beneficial action. 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) is an enzyme that transforms fatty acids into leukotrienes. Since 5-LOX levels increase over time, excess 5-LOX has been linked to some of the common effects of normal aging.
The Indian plant Boswellia serrata contains compounds shown to inhibit 5-LOX to support joint and arterial health. Boswellia inhibits 5-LOX at the cellular level. Scientific data reveals that a compound in boswellia called AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-ß-boswellic acid) is the key to this beneficial action.

The typical American diet adds to 5-LOX levels. Foods rich in omega-6 fatty acids like red meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products, along with high-glycemic carbohydrates, trigger production of arachidonic acid. The body produces 5-LOX enzyme in response to arachidonic acid.
5-LOX creates compounds like leukotriene B4 out of arachidonic acid. Inhibiting leukotriene B4 helps support joint, arterial and tissue health. Inhibiting 5-LOX also helped support healthy cell division in preclinical models.
